The Shadow Runner is a broad class. It can be thought of as having two tendencies: thieves and assassins. Some focus on remaining unseen and relieving other people of assorted valuables; others enjoy surprising enemies and eliminating them from concealment.

Both sides can also be combined. How a Shadow Runner is played is largely up to the player. Attribute values associated with the class are development and suitability targets, not hard character-creation blockers.

Shadow Runners possess a special gift: they can merge with shadows and appear almost invisible. Some special attacks can only be used from this state; after taking an action they emerge from the shadows again.

During combat they cannot simply vanish back into the shadows at will. Later they gain combat talents and combinations that allow this again under specific rules. The exact conditions are defined in the Compendium.

As a member of a group, the Shadow Runner is a welcome companion because the class can be useful in many situations: opening locks, moving unnoticed, or making precise attacks in combat.

Canonically, Drûn Elves, Half-Elves, Mitmaar Humans, the Southern People, Hobbits, Kender, and Gnomes can become Shadow Runners. White Elves, Mist Elves, Dwarves, and the Northern People are not valid species for this class. Which religions are actually possible depends on the relevant species-class combination.
