The Mages of Oldôr are powerful, intelligent, and gifted masters of their art. Over the ages their magic developed into distinct paths known as elemental and arcane circles. Under RARE Canon v1.0, original spells may be created from spell level 6 onward and require GM approval.
Incorrectly phrased or poorly interpreted original spells can have unexpected and dangerous consequences, so their final design always remains a deliberate GM decision.
Mages, also called Magi by many inhabitants of Oldôr, like to travel through forests and steppes in search of wonders and discoveries that can be studied and analysed.
Despite their travels, Magi are generally solitary and often seek contact with others only when unavoidable. They protect claimed woodland areas and towers with magical wards and devote themselves to the magical arts they have learned through talent or research. Their guild maxim is “Nihil esse sinit” — “Nothing is impossible.”
Like Necromancers, Magi usually remain away from the centre of battle. They prefer to resolve disputes through conversation rather than violence and turn to magic only when no other path is apparent. When battle does come, their elemental powers are not to be underestimated.
By binding spells into stones or artefacts, Mages gain additional ways to manage magical resources; the specific values and items are defined in the Compendium.
Mages may follow a broad range of outlooks. Which religions and species-class combinations are actually permitted is determined by the canonical mappings. White Elves, Mist Elves, Drûn Elves, Half-Elves, and Gnomes can become Mages.
Magic access also follows this rule: spell level 1 is available even with permanent Intelligence below 14. Spell levels 2 through 6 require permanent Intelligence of at least 14. Temporary Intelligence increases do not unlock those levels.
