Like wolves, they usually avoid humans, though some are known to raid farms. Anyone who unexpectedly finds themselves face to face with a bear should remember that a single swipe of its paw can be enough to kill a person. Some farmers claim that climbing a tree is the safest response, but bears are known to climb as well—or simply shake people out of the branches.
